Basic, sustainable steps led to what was, for her, a smooth path to an easy weight loss. ‘I didn’t work out every day,’ she recounted. ‘Over time, I integrated regular exercise into my daily life and adjusted my eating habits by listening to my body’s hunger and fullness signals – frequently reaching for healthier food choices.’ In the span of a few years, Pauline who had once felt self-conscious when shopping at the grocery store put on her first pair of jeans ‘by accident’, only to realise that she now fit into them. Once unwilling to hold hands with her husband in public, she now, with great happiness, appeared before the class.
Pauline believed firmly, as she had from the beginning, in loving herself and being ‘OK with who she was!’ Aware that ‘the mind likes to aim small’, she liked to repeat her simple positive affirmations: ‘My body and me are 100 per cent OK; I am 100 per cent OK’ – and she liked repeating heartwarming words of encouragement such as ‘I am beautiful, I am amazing, I know about my energy flow … I shine, I smile, I ask for what I want, I love myself and I take care of myself.’ Above all, Pauline learned to be patient with herself. As she practised her mindfulness techniques, she smiled at the small irritations, no longer seeing them as obstacles to be exorcised, but as part of her daily reality as someone coping with a chronic health condition. Her mindset, once shrivelled and black, slowly emerged from its womb, broken but vivid, strong and hope-filled.
Finding Balance and Joy
In order to maintain this new way of living, Pauline Chalamet was adamant about avoiding anxieties, cravings and a restrictive mindset when it came to loving herself and feeling great in her body on a day-to-day basis – even if it included weight gain. The difference between her previous approach and the behaviours she now repeats daily is that she learned to systematically take care of her body in ways that were both pleasurable and sustainable. First, by integrating the types of exercise that felt like precious moments of joy into her movement routine (dancing, yoga, hiking, etc), and then by making it easier for her to choose healthy low-calorie foods by learning to cook healthily (and consuming less.) She also tapped into the power of her personal spiritual practice of daily meditation on a regular basis.
Pauline saw the value of ‘having a little bit of what you fancy’, and planned regular treats into her weekly food plans. Her newfound ability to enjoy the food she loved, slowly and mindfully, meant that her favourite things didn’t need to be restricted; her life didn’t have to be either. As an added benefit, her new way of eating helped the weight drop off at a steady rather than rapid rate, which she found easier to maintain. Not having the normal rollercoaster ups and downs meant that she felt much more content within herself than she had during her ‘life before the programme’.
Self-care became an integral part of Pauline Chalamet’s ongoing path to wellness. She slept as much as she could, tried to combat stress, and participated in activities that allowed her to centre herself, such as yoga.
