Today’s topic, losing weight and losing friends, is a highly emotional subject and I feel like that’s an understatement. I feel like that’s one of the reasons why women struggle with weight loss. It saddens my heart to think there are women out there who are — I hate to say the word malicious, because I feel like it’s just their own stuff coming up. It’s their own insecurities, but it can really feel like a malicious act when your friend encourages you to eat another piece of cake or tries to talk you out of going for a workout. Maybe she’s giving you a hard time because you losing weight doesn’t make you look as good as you did with a little extra weight on you, but the truth is that it happens. It happens way moreLosing weight and Losing friends -- Howoften than I believe it should, but it’s something we have to address and something we have to talk about. So if you’re on a weight loss journey right now or you’re getting ready to embark on one, I really want you to think about this. Think about it deeply. Imagine yourself at your ideal weight. How would people act? How would people treat you? A lot of the times we automatically go to being “thinner” equals being better, more successful, sexier, so on and so forth, but I want you to go a little deeper. I want you to do a journaling assignment. I want you to set the timer for 15 minutes and I want you to write over and over again “being healthy and fit means… being healthy and fit means…” Write this over and over. Now here’s the key — you HAVE to do it for the whole entire time, because it’s around minute 12, 13, and 14 that you will get to the deeper emotional stuff and being fearful that you might lose some friends if you lose weight might come up. Here’s what to do — you have to reevaluate people who are closest to you. The truth is, is that true friends want what’s best for you. Five years ago when I was starting my coaching business, and I was embarking on all new adventures, I was really shocked how many of my “friends” really didn’t support me and I had to have conversations with them and say, “This is where I want my life to go. This is where I see things going, and if you don’t support me in that, then we’re probably just going to have to part ways here, and we can love each other from afar.” These were not easy conversations. I was so nervous. My coach had to really talk me through them and really get me mentally prepared for both sides of the coin on if they said “Yes I support you” or “I’m just gonna go my own way,” but it’s a conversation that needs to be had. You need to surround yourself with people who will lift you higher, because if you are surrounding yourself with people who are going to judge you and bring you down, you will never lose weight for the long term, ever. You know what? You deserve to lose weight and you deserve to have amazing friends who want the best for you. If you become a millionaire, if you become a fitness model, any of those things, they need to support you whichever way your life turns. If people are popping into your mind right now, of those who aren’t those people, you either need to have a hard conversation with them, you totally need to do it. I know it’s hard, but as your coach, I’m telling you, you need to do it, or you need to really start separating back. Now eventually if you start separating, they’ll probably ask you, “Hey, what’s been going on?” and then the hard conversation is going to have to come at that point. Now, just because I believe in not just watching these videos, but actually taking action, I want you to do something with me right now. It's a diabetic medicine that, when used off-label, can also cause rapid weight loss. But the high demand and cost have deterred many from accessing this medication, with others searching for cheaper alternatives. And that is the problem. Those alternatives could kill you. The FDA is now investigating reports of two deaths and dozens of injuries after people allegedly took fake medications, which claimed to be the real deal. The FDA says there have been 28 reports of adverse effects from counterfeit semaglutide in the US, and it's an even bigger issue in the UK. Officials there have seized over 300 of these fake injectables, and that's only what has been caught. So joining us now is medical weight loss physician who is board certified, Dr. Sue Decotiis. Dr. Decotiis, thank you so much for your time. First of all, what is your reaction to knowing now that the FDA is investigating this? I'm not surprised at all. I practice in Midtown Manhattan, and I have patients from all over the country and even international patients that have told me that they couldn't get the medication through the regular physician. They went to one of these online platforms, and they bought medication either from an online platform or directly from one of these bogus pharmacies. They either didn't get results at all, or they got sick, or they felt they got ripped off, or they couldn't get the medication after a week or so. So it was a very strange situation. State and federal law does not allow legal pharmacies to sell medications directly to patients under any circumstances. So that's number one. Don't buy directly from any pharmacy. Online platforms are dangerous anyway because, even if you're getting the right medication, you're not being monitored. No one is following your weight as far as your body composition. Like how much fat are you losing? Are you losing muscle? Are you hydrating? It's really important for patients to get proper medical care for the medications to work. In my practice, my patients have done better than a lot of the patients in the studies because they were followed so carefully. When they got to their ideal weight, we tapered them very slowly and followed them with body composition skills for quite a while. It made such a difference in their long-term success and health. Absolutely. That supervision, that monitoring is so important. Dr., there are reports that bogus versions of the drug have also made their way onto actual pharmacy store shelves. How could that happen if it's true? How can people protect themselves if they think they're actually getting the real thing? They should let their physician know, and their physician can get the medication tested. Go to a reputable pharmacy. A reputable pharmacy will ensure they're sourcing the medication correctly. That pharmacy could be shut down without proper protocols in place. There are obvious risks when taking fake versions of any drug. What about the risks even with the real thing? With the real drug, you can get GI side effects, especially in the beginning, such as nausea, vomiting, reflux, constipation, or abdominal pain. We slowly bring people up in dosage to tolerate the drug better. Hydration is critical. I tell my patients to drink about a gallon of water a day to burn fat effectively. Dehydration can exacerbate side effects, especially in the first month or two. Lastly, for people wanting this drug for weight loss, what is your advice? Realize that there are good compounding pharmacies with alternatives to Big Pharma drugs. If you're overweight and can't lose weight on your own, consider these drugs with proper medical supervision.
