As I near my fifth year out from my Lap BAND surgery, I wanted to take some time to reflect on how much this surgery and my involvement with the Bandster community has impacted my life. I was a 34 year old mother of three, when I finally came to the decision that I needed to address my weight issue. More importantly, I needed something that would give me hope of maintaining the weight I would lose. I had tried all kinds of methods of weight loss in the past, and was successful at times, but the weight always came back. This regaining of weight had me looking for a new alternative for weight loss. Luckily, I came across the Lap BAND shortly after it was approved for use in Canada. After extensive research on the Internet, I knew this was the tool that I wanted. I waited patiently for my consult with the doctor and hoped that I would be accepted as a patient so that I could begin my journey to better health. When we met, we discussed the surgery; he informed me of the possible problems and let me ask all my questions. Much to my delight, he decided that I was a good candidate for the Laparoscopic BAND. My journey began on November 1, 2000, when my LaparoscopicBAND was inserted. Dr. Yau has been a constant source of support and encouragement from the very beginning. I've always had the proper level of restriction, followed the recommended dietary guidelines - so I successfully lost weight. The online and in-person support groups have proved, and continue to be, an invaluable source of support for me along this journey. Today, I am 80 pounds lighter, maintaining my weight quite well. I am a happier and healthier person. I have learned that while being thin does not solve all of life's problems, it does improve attitude and self-esteem. - Kathy
